Here is a report of a speech given by the Bishop of Coventry in 1932 which I reference in Down-Up.
“Yo-Yo and diabolo may be useful diversions but God save us from what I may call the Yo-Yo mind,” said the Bishop of Coventry (Dr Mervyn Haigh) at Coventry Diocesan Conference. “Be sure,” he added, “judgement will overtake that mind.”
Many people still positively sought refuge from the very thought of the distress of otheres by trying to concentrate on their own occupation and amusement.
